Keeping Your Body Mobile and Healthy

By Chuck Anderson

There are a lot of notions about health around, each with its own merits. One which I have started to wholly embrace is that retaining correct motion in a system is absolutely vital to attaining maximal wellness. What I like concerning this philosophy is that the idea appears to apply regardless of what actual physical structure you consider. I come from a chiropractic perspective, and I feel that this idea pertains to not only what I do as a doctor of chiropractic, but also to health concerns which I seldom address. Let me give you a few illustrations of what I mean.

What occurs with heart disease? The blood vessels around the heart begin to decrease in size, ordinarily because they build up a covering of plaque called atherosclerosis. This plaque impedes the natural circulation (motion) of the circulatory system, and over time can lead to a heart attack simply because the heart isn't getting the nutrition it requires.

Are you knowledgeable about bedsores, and why they occur? When a person is motionless, bedridden, and unable to adjust positions, the simple pressure of their body on a bed causes the development of bedsores. The body actually starts to break down simply because it's under constant force. Even though this stress is considerably light, the fact that it's continuous makes it enough to cause harm to body tissue. The exact same notion is valid within the body as well. Your joints are created to move. When they don't, tension builds up within them, which can result in inflammation and discomfort. In due course it may cause osteoarthritis. That is the reason why chiropractic care may be so essential in helping to preserve a healthy lifestyle. My objective being a chiropractor is to determine those joints, and muscles which may not be as mobile as they should be, and offer corrective therapies to restore the complete natural mobility.

A very fascinating study was done a few years back where they entirely immobilized the knee within a bunny for several weeks. Following merely six weeks of not moving, the scientists found that the immobilized joints exhibited significant modifications, including modifications in the cartilage, and the development of bone spurs. This is a wonderful model of what might happen if our joints don't move like they are designed to.

Consider what a vast majority of Americans do on a daily basis. Many individuals go to work and sit in a chair eight hours per day, then come home and relax by sitting in front of the Television/computer for the next couple of hours before going to bed and beginning the pattern all over the next day. What effect is this having to our bodies? If this sounds familiar, take a quick inventory of your posture whenever you sit. Are the shoulders curved? Does your neck protrude in front of your shoulders? Is there an obvious curve in your spine as you slouch in the chair? How much is your back really mobile in a day? If you're honest, you'll recognize that your back doesn't move much at all. Sure it's not being artificially immobilized as was the situation in the research above, but eight or more hours a day of not moving for 10, 20, 30 yearsit's likely to take a toll on your own body. So do yourself a favor. Get up, move about, and take breaks from sitting. Get a chiropractic treatment. Exercise daily, regardless if it's simply a short walk. Keeping your joints and body mobile is totally important if you wish to sustain your maximal wellness as you grow older.
