Tonsilloliths: An Understanding

By Kevin Benth

Have you experienced sudden pains in your throat despite having neither swelling nor infection? Has it made you wonder what it could possibly be? You may be surprised to know that this pain may be due to tonsil stones present in your throat. They are very small in size - as small as a pea and can be seen housed in the folds or crevices in your throat.

The reason why these stones are so hard is due to the presence of phosphorus and similar minerals. When these stones grow in size, they can cause you extreme discomfort. The small stones, since they are little, are incapable of causing any problem, but there always lies the probability that they may grow in size and cause pain and distress, troubling you on a daily basis till you get them removed.

Symptoms It is not always possible to spot these stones in your throat by using a mirror. The condition of tonsil stones is accompanied by many symptoms, and you'll be required to be on the lookout for those too. The most common symptom is halitosis. It is also the most easily occurring sign of presence of tonsil stones. A tonsil stone, or tonsillolith as it is medically known, is due to calcified, hardened formation in the throat around the tonsil region.

Bad Breath points at other underlying problems in your oral cavity as well but halitosis should not be mistaken for just a state of foul smell in the mouth

The sulfuric compounds that are produced through the bacteria living in the mouth and your throat sometimes give rise to the problem of halitosis. The increasing number of bacteria results in an increased production of sulfuric compounds that result in the bead breath.

Not only these bacteria cause bad breath, they also cause the development of tonsillolith or stones around the tonsils. Any tenderness and accompanying swelling in your throat is another sign of the presence of tonsil stones in your throat.

Although throat inflammation can also be attributed to a lot of causes, more often than not, it is a very prominent sign of foreign substances present in the throat walls i.e. presence of stones in our tonsil area. If there is a presence of white debris in your throat area, it is definitely another symptom of the tonsil stones developing in your throat.

A healthy throat should not witness any debris. However, an ENT specialist who deals with the ears nose and throat should be consulted in case there are large white formations in the throat. Ear pain is another symptom closely associated with tonsil stones. An inexplicable ear pain is the third symptom that points out to the presence of tonsil stones in your throat.

An intolerable pain in your ears is another symptom of the presence of stones in your throat. Tonsil stones are capable of inducing pain in your ear. Our eyes, ears and throat share an extensive and sensitive nerve network which causes related troubles in all the areas if any one of them suffers from some problems. So if your throat is housing stones, it can be felt in other surrounding parts, especially your ears.

Tonsil stone removal An appropriate surgery through an ENT doctor is the safest way of getting rid of the tonsil stones. There is no need to panic about the surgery as it is not painful. A mild anesthesia will be given to you by the doctor that will not put you to sleep but will give you a numb feeling in the area where the surgery is performed.
